Bisagra004

31/12/2018 En el orbe

The fourth edition of our magazine dressed in black appearing in the middle of a complicated political situation, in which Alberto Fujimori was pardoned by Pedro Pablo Kuzcynski to serve the rest of his sentence at home, as a strange Christmas gift, on December 24 of 2017. In the midst of these complicated situations, we invited the artists Fernando Bryce and Nancy La Rosa, as well as the director of the Lima Art Museum, Natalia Majluf to talk about the insufficiency of the Peruvian State to create support and platforms according to the needs in the contemporary local art scene.
We also reviewed the complicated participation of Peru in the Venice Biennale, what happened with the work of the recently deceased Juan Javier Salazar, and the people who were part of that edition of the biennial.

Capacete, the Brazilian art residency, in accordance to the arrival of Documenta 14 in Athens proposed a special edition and brought a group of Latin American artists to live in Greece for almost a year. Some of its participants, Eliana Otta, Jarí Malta and Gris García, took Bisagra's invitation as an opportunity to digest the experience and think about its implications from a “Global South’s” point of view.

The same year this magazine was published, the exhibition “Radical Women, Latin American Art, 1960-1985” took place. Florencia Portocarrero writes about it in this issue, originally presented within the framework of the Pacific Standard project Time: Los Angeles-América Latina (PST LA-LA), and also Ruth Estevez contextualized it, helping us to understand the complexities involved in committing to bringing marginal voices closer to broad audiences.

The visual delight of Bisagra004 is brought by a selection of images from the collection made by a group of artists whom we invited to propose trends for the European summer 2018. Disordering the usual cycles of production and consumption, original and copy, design and imitation, this group of Peruvian artists gave a second life to their own clothes, and put together a set of portable outfits, which made up Bisagra's participation in Berlin Art Week 2018, an invitation made by Kinderhook & Caracas
