Event
Foteini Aravani will talk about the exhibition City Now City Future: The City is Ours, at the Museum of London and how her residency at Bisagra will contribute to the programme of events that frame it. The Museum of London in 2017 will run a major programme of exhibitions, creative commissions, large-scale public events, talks and debates inviting everyone to participate in shaping the city.

Curating this exhibition at the Museum of London and looking into London-based initiatives made me realise that researching a city is more than reading about it; researching a city is a personal experience, a sentimental journey.

And where is art in this journey? OHO Group, a Slovenian artists collective formed in the late 60s, rejected art as an activity separate from our everyday life; any part of life, they believed, could be art. Marina Abramović, in her acceptance speech for the Golden Lion for best artist in the Venice Biennale 1997, said: I am only interested in art which can change the ideology of society. Art which is committed only to aesthetic values is incomplete.

In Lima during my residency at Bisagra i wanted to feel the fabric of this city, what makes Lima the city that is now. During this month i identified four Lima-based initiatives that, in their own personal way, are involved in different inspiring projects to improve living in this city through art, science and community empowerment. I had the chance to meet with them and these meetings resulted in a short video that features their projects and it is going to be screened on the night.

Representatives of the four featured initiatives will present their projects and the talk will end with a creative dialogue around the city and how such projects and community organisation can fill in the gaps of the lack of state funding.
